1. Historical and Cultural Sites in Gallipoli
Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park
Located on the Gallipoli Peninsula—the site of the Battle of Çanakkale—this national park is one of the must-see destinations on the peninsula and
is situated approximately 30–35 kilometers from the district center. You can reach the area by private vehicle or by taking minibuses that depart from the district center.
The national park, built in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives in the land and air battles of the Battle of Gallipoli—a conflict that determined the
country’s fate—contains monuments and graves. During your visit to the national park, where you can learn a great deal about how the war was won, you can
gain even more detailed information if you take a guided tour.
During your vacation in Gallipoli, you can visit the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park free of charge to experience the region’s spiritual power and gain a deeper understanding of the spirit of the Battle of Çanakkale.
Established in 1973 and listed on the United Nations’ list of National Parks and Protected Areas, the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical
National Park is located at the southern tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula and covers an area of 33,000 hectares on the European side of the Dardanelles Strait
The sites of the Gallipoli Naval and Land Battles of World War I are located on the Gallipoli Peninsula. In addition to a wide range of artifacts—including sunken ships, cannons,
trenches, forts, and bastions, as well as hundreds of other war-related relics—the area is home to the war graves and memorials of more than 60,000 Turkish martyrs and more than
250,000 Australian, New Zealand, British, and French soldiers. Battlefields, war graves, monuments, and war-related relics have been designated as “historic sites” and “cultural assets.”
There are also numerous “archaeological sites and monuments” dating back to 4000 BCE. Among the wide variety of “natural sites and monuments” are beaches, coves, patches of woodland
intermixed with Mediterranean scrub (maquis), striking geological and geomorphological formations, a salt lake (which until recently was a coastal lake), and an intriguing collection
of “cultural heritage” featuring unique examples of 15th-century military architecture.
